No, it’s got nothing to do with the upcoming election, which I did vote in, but only once. Instead I’ve exported the ratings on the anime currently in the database to a table of “tags”, and updated them like I’ve been saying I was going to do for awhile, eliminating traits that nearly all anime have in common (there can’t be more than a series or two that break the fourth wall).

Saturday, October 30th, 2010Holo: Not Just Cached Wisdom
Tuesday, October 26th, 2010I’m currently watching Spice and Wolf on YouTube after it was recommended by a friend because of (some) connection to economics. I’ve seen the first two episodes so far, and I’m impressed at how the writers handle Holo:
- Her actions and manners are alien, but not cloudcuckoolander. She acts like a superhuman being with oddball preferences (from a human perspective) that’s been observing humans for a fairly long time.
- She doesn’t just spout cached wisdom that sounds good. The writers actually took some time to give the character that keeps calling herself wise some lines that are original and, dare I say, have some real wisdom to them given the circumstances.

The Shonen Philosophy
Tuesday, July 13th, 2010“All of these Shonen shows have exactly the wrong message: violence solves everything… violence and the will to power.” – Scott/Silence, remarking on Buso Renkin
I don’t believe there’s a conspiracy of shonen mangaka and animators out there trying to promote a more violent world. Although that would be extremely cool if that were the case, now that I think about it. It’d also be very shonen, since a lot of these shows have shady organizations that want to change the world. Still, a literal-minded interpretation of a lot of shows does lead to this conclusion.
Mayor at Anime Expo
Thursday, July 1st, 2010I’ve often pondered the difficulties of having public officials at anime conventions. Also, I find this headline amusing:
